Bury St Edmunds got its name when the remains of the martyred king of East Anglia, Edmund were brought here for safekeeping. The town also has an association with the Magna Carta – the Barons of England met here to force King John to sign the Charter of Liberties. Popular with pilgrims throughout the middle Ages, these days you can also find pilgrims of a different kind checking out Bury St Edmunds’ famous Greene King Brewery and Britain’s smallest pub, The Nutshell. Famous residents include Bob Hoskins and the theatre director, Sir Peter Hall.
