Located just outside Bristol, the historic town of Stoke Gifford was named by General's Osberne Giffard, who received the surrounding land as a gift from William the Conqueror after the Norman invasion of 1066. King Edward II threw out his ancestor, Sir John Gifford, after he raided the King's baggage train in 1324. It seems that the lineage of Gifford were always at the source of some scandal or other for they had the reputation of being an “aggressive” family. There was a grazing common at the end of Mead Road, which was apparently haunted by the evil spirits of dead donkeys, sheep, goats and cattle – oooh scary!
