Basingstoke lies across a valley at the mouth of the River Loddon and although thought by many to be a new town it has been a prosperous market town for hundreds of years. Home to companies such as GAME and Motorola, even in Victorian times it was a centre of industry when James Isaac Thornycroft set up his steam-powered lorry factory. Heavily bombed in WWII, Basingstoke has thrived from the post-war period onwards. Kate Winslet was born nearby and both Liz Hurley and Thomas Burberry the creator of the Burberry fashion house are from the area.
