Pronounced 'Chinnum', Chineham, is about four miles from Basingstoke. It is thought that the name means 'farm' or 'enclosure' although others have suggested that it might mean 'ravine'. There have been dwellings here for hundreds of years and was first recorded in the Doomsday Book in 1086 although recently, when building the Great Binfield school, archaeological findings were found dating back to 2000 BC. In the 7th century there was an Anglo-Saxon encampment here. By the 1800's Chineham was just a small farm, or hamlet, with an abandoned medieval moated site nearby but it has grown into a lively village since then.
