Alverstoke lies half a mile from Stokes Bay, where warships too big to fit into Portsmouth Harbour are berthed. Two miles down the road are the remarkable remains of an even more famous warship, Henry VIII’s beloved Mary Rose, which saw action in 1545 and finally sank, along with its 400-man crew, in the Solent when it came face-to-face with a French fleet. There it remained until its rediscovery in 1836 when it was snagged in a fishing net. Remarkably it was raised from the water in 1982. Alverstoke was also home to the notable physician and writer, John Wickham Legg, who published many key medical texts of his era.
